An Earth where corporations have replaced governments as the dominant power structure, and the gap between those who have everything and those who have nothing has grown so wide it has become a kind of religion. The desperate and the lonely have turned to neo-spiritualism and hedge magic to fill the void left by collapsed institutions, and a brisk black market exists for sigils, hex-kits, and bottled saints' tears of dubious provenance. Domestic android units, called which-wheres, are a status symbol among the upper-middle class. They are capable enough to run a household, sociable enough to simulate family, and are close enough to humanity that the devil is willing to make bargains with them.
